Shiloh Baptist Church Cemetery

The cemetery at Shiloh Baptist Church is quite large. I’ve tried to create a way for someone who has never been there to find the grave of their loved one or ancestor easily. I divided the cemetery into two grids based on the location of the graves in relation to the church and parking lot – these grids are called Section 1 and Section 2.

Section 1 is South of the Parking Lot and Church. It is divided in Numbered Rows going from #1 (Nearest the Parking Lot) to #15 (Farthest from the Parking Lot). Then each Row is divided into Grave Plots labeled with letters. As you walk down the row going EAST the plot letters will follow the lowercase alphabet from a to b to c to d, etc.

Section 2 is the shorter rows of headstones in the rear of the Church. It is divided into Capitalized Alphabetical Rows going from Row A to Row Z. As you walk down a Row, count the number of headstones you pass along the way from 1 to 2 to 3 to 4, etc.

** A single tree planted at the rear corner of the parking lot marks the border between Sections 1 and 2**

Example: Section 1: Let’s say your ancestor is Betty L. Franklin and her grave is located at Plot 6/e. From the Parking Lot, start at the end of the first long row closest to the Parking Lot and Route 3. Route 3 will be on your right. Walk south, out six rows, and you will come to the grave of Charles Edward Hepburn, Jr. and his wife Alma Carolynne Hepburn at Plot 6/a. Turn and walk east down this Row four more headstones and you will come to Plot 6/e where Betty L. Franklin is buried.

Example: Section 2: Let’s say your ancestor is Kate Columbia Billingsley and her grave is located at Plot H/3. From the Parking Lot, walk to the back of the Church. At the Southeast Corner of the Parking Lot there is a tree where the shorter rows begin. This first row under the tree is Row A. Walk up the Rows, with the Church on your left, and count each row as you go – A, B, C, D, etc, until you come to Row H. Now, walk down row H, with the church behind you and count out 3 headstones. You’ve just found your ancestor.

Remember: If your ancestors plot starts with a number and ends with a lowercase letter, like 2/a, or 8/f, they are in Section 1. If their plot starts with an uppercase letter and ends in a number, like A/4 or X/9, they are in Section 2.
