Karen Gibbons     Are you familiar with this place? I am looking for Kingrey's from Middletown. One person has told me the Kingrey's i am searching for must be of Floyd County and another has told me Middletown is in Frederick County. Here is what I know- Charles Edward Gibbons married Mary Asminia Kingrey sometime between 1885 and 1895. They had three sons, one whose name I do not know, another who was called Jack and lived in California in the 1950's and a third, my grandfather, named William "Bill" Thomas Gibbons. Mary's father owned a plantation and was a mastersergeant or something like that in the Battle of New Orleans under Jackson. He disowned her when she married Charles. Charles may have come from Ireland. I am guessing that Mary was born naywhere from the late 1850's to the early 1870's. I know this is very little to go on, but it is all I have. Thank you in advance for any help you can give me.

Marj Morrison Kiger Just starting on researching family tree. My grandfather was Reginald Cleaves Morrison (b. 12/1900 d.8/1989 Baltimore, MD) Son of Reginald Graham Morrison and Bessie Lee Crow (d. circa 1961). Bessie Lee was daughter of Thomas Crow and had a brother Thomas and sister Marie (all of Berryville). The family estate was Crow's Nest located not far from the Battletown Inn. ( I had many lunches at the in as a child.) Many relatives (Crows and Morrisons) are buried in the old church cemetary, this includes a great something grandmother who changed the Morrison name from Morison. Some aunts Fannie Crow and ? ran Crow's Nest as a boarding house for some time in the late 1800's to 1900's. I believe Reginald Graham had a brother Harold Morrison also from the area. I have not been able to return to Berryville since my grandmother's death (Edith Flora Waldron Morrison) who is buried in a cemetary outside of town. I hope to come down some time soon; however, would appreciate any info anyone can provide as the Crows and Morrisons were prominent in the town. I have not been able to contact a cousin? that works at the Bank of Clarke County - another Reginald Graham I believe who had sons named Graham and Bill and a daughter. I apologize if this is too broad; but hope someome can help me. Thanks!

1996 Queries

Fri, 06 Dec 1996 From: cdiller@juno.com (Corinne H Diller) My POTTS family had come from the area around Philadelphia, in the late 1730's, to Loudoun / Jefferson / Frederick Cos., Va. They repeated given names (just about) more than any other family I have ever researched, and that makes them tough to prove. I have been doing work on them lately, though, and can prove some things about some of them now. Some of my Marylanders were from the eastern part of Md., migrated to western Md., then onward to the next frontier. I have spent about 3 years researching intensely in the western Md. records . . . and I can actually prove something about my ancestors now. NORRIS is my mother's maiden name, which places it high on my priorities list, and I discovered two generations died without wills, and there are no deeds showing transfer of land. I was lucky because my John, son of William, son of Thomas . . . they were all eldest sons, and by tracing about 40 years of tax records, I could prove how each one inherited the eldest sons share by primogeniture . Still have work to do on that family, and have been pulling out info. on my other ancestors in western Md. and northern Va. while I research Norris . . . one social trend I have discovered is that it is quite COMMON for men in western Md. to have land and/or in-laws in either northern Va. or southern Penna. I think we tend to get hung up on boundaries, which are imaginary lines anyhow ! This is why it is good to have a discussion list that covers an area, not just a county.

The CHAPLINE and SWEARINGEN are western Maryland families, and earlier had been in eastern Md. They are neighbors of my families in Md. The CHAPLINE family is connected to another branch of the NORRIS family, but I haven't worked out all the details of that yet.

In the 1700's, there were several land speculators in western Md., and the land was actively promoted and sold, so there were a lot of people moving into that area from the north and east. Some of my people who remained in Western Md. also speculated in land in northern Va.

I have been researching 25 years, and have probably made more contacts this year via e-mail, than in the previous 10 years of placing queries in bulletins ! Have found info. on a couple of lines I was hopelessly stuck on.

ALLEN - Robert ALLEN emigrated from County Armagh in Ireland about 1736 and settled in Winchester, Frederick County, Virginia. He died there in 1769. His son, Benjamin ALLEN, was born in Frederick County in 1744. Benjamin's son, John, was born in Virginia, probably in either Frederick or Botetourt County in 1826. Another of Benjamin's sons, James Green ALLEN, was born in Botetourt County in 1779. After the Revolutionary War Benjamin, John and James all migrated from Virginia to Casey County, Kentucky, probably in the 1790 to 1800 time frame. My family ties are to the above Robert ALLEN, who is my direct ancestor, through: my father Clifford Dale ALLEN; his father Charles Franklin ALLEN; his father William Martin ALLEN; his father the above John ALLEN; and his father Benjamin ALLEN.
